This page explains the categories of risk that come with using any centralized crypto exchange and self-custody wallet — including Backpack. Read this once before you register.
Cryptocurrency prices can move dramatically within minutes. A position that is comfortably in profit when you go to bed may be near liquidation by morning. Cross-margin systems amplify this: the more collateral is shared, the faster a market move can cascade across your account.
Margin positions can be liquidated when collateral falls below maintenance thresholds. Liquidation is not theoretical — it is a real, observable event, and the price at which it triggers depends on the exchange's risk engine and the order book depth at that moment.
The Backpack wallet and on-chain integrations rely on smart contracts. Even audited contracts can contain vulnerabilities. Self-custody means you bear the consequences of any exploit that affects your addresses.
Regulatory frameworks for digital assets continue to evolve. Services available today may be restricted tomorrow. Backpack's regulatory footprint reduces some of this risk, but does not eliminate it.
Centralized exchanges can experience outages, custody failures, or insolvency events. The combination of daily proof of reserves, segregated sub-accounts, and a regulated entity structure reduces — but does not eliminate — this category of risk.
The largest source of loss for individual users is account compromise via phishing, weak passwords, or seed-phrase leakage. Backpack provides tools (2FA, hardware keys, allowlists) — but the user must use them.
Most compromises are preventable. Run through this list before moving meaningful capital.

Crypto assets are volatile and involve substantial risk of loss. Past performance is not indicative of future results. You should not commit funds you cannot afford to lose, and you should consult a qualified professional before making investment decisions.
